Department of Geriatric Medicine, Göteborg University Sweden

Historical background. Long-term care medicine became a medical speciality of its own in 1969, and in 1992 its name was changed to geriatric medicine. In 1977, Sweden´s second chair in geriatric medicine was located in Göteborg, and at the same time the Department of Geriatric Medicine was created. Its first professor was Alvar Svanborg, and at his retirement in 1988 he was succeeded by Bertil Steen.

From 1994, the Department of Geriatric Medicine is one of five departments within the Institute of Community Medicine together with the Departments of Enviromental Medicine, Primary Health Care, Rehabilitation Medicine and Social Medicine.
